US HISTORY

The establishment of the Upsilon Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, was a long awaited objective by many who were adamant about change and structure on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University. The need for leaders of the light. The longing for a true essence of brotherhood. The demand for black excellence in collegiate academia. The desire for men who will make it their devoir to not only lead but advocate for the community through its service. This aim was born on a cold Tuesday, in icy Ithaca New York, and actualized on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. On August 5th, 2015 with the efforts of The Xi Omicron Lambda Alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and others the charter of Upsilon Sigma was obtained.

Since its founding on a cold, Tuesday on December 4, 1906,  Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world. The burden and expectations of an Alpha Man is one that only a frozen few could carry. The Campus of Florida Gulf Coast University, was forever changed when 12 young men took the call to transcend. To not just join the Greek community, and be confined to the norms of business as usual but to etablish preeminence. Those Men would come to be known as the Alpha line, The Charter members of Upsion Sigma; Bro. Ryan R. Brammer, Bro. Rossenel Laguerre, Bro. Antwon L. Lindsey, Bro. Kevin A. Ho-Yen, Bro. Jamar O. Powell, Bro. Austin J. Wilson, Bro. Jarvis Hannah, Bro. Nuniez A. Philor, Bro. Daniel C. Stallings, Bro. Malik J. Hines, Bro. James D. Lyttle.

The Upsilon Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated strives to emulate and encompass the motto of the fraternity through all endeavors. To be "First of All" in all opportunities especially in campus leadership. To be "Servants of All" to both the campus and neighboring community. To "Transcend All" aspects of college life at Florida Gulf Coast University.
